Panther Rants is The Onion of Pitt Sports. Formerly a serious recruiting blog written by a serious recruiting writer, the site was taken over by mediocre bloggers that provide satire, sarcasm and anything but serious information. Greg Lee Update

Panther Rants today caught up with Greg Lee….should we say…”dropped” on by? The Biletnikoff candidate in 2004 and 2005 and he was also on the Preseason Heisman watch. Lee had a phenomenal 2004 season and we had high hopes for Greg in 2005. Greg didn’t live up to the hype and we were hoping he would stay instead of declaring for the NFL draft. Greg got suckered by his agent and went pro. The end result was not too good. He never got drafted and did some practice squad work. Then he fell off the face of the earth. So what’s been going on with Greg?

“I’m currently working at Vocelli’s Pizza,” says Greg, “I’ve been here for over a year. I almost lost my job here, but coach Wannstedt put in a good word in for me to stay.”

Greg was originally hired to deliver pizzas. The manager, Steven Schubb who is the brother of Mark Schubb, hired Greg because of his athletic potential and ties to Pitt Football.

“We felt with his 4.6 speed, we’d get the pizzas delivered faster.” Steven mentioned

Well that was not the case. Greg had his struggles from his first week with the company. Management said he seemed a step slower and he just didn’t seem too into it. There were also incidents of him being tripped up by the customer’s poodle as he tried to elude it while delivering a pizza. He also had incidents of dropping the pizza while trying to carry it to the doorstep. He also fumbled some of his tip money when pulling out for change.

Schubb says they were on the verge of releasing Greg, but that’s until Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt gave him a call.

“I didn’t want this kid to keep suffering from his mistakes” Says Dave, “I talked Steven into giving Greg another chance by putting him somewhere where he may succeed.”

Right now, Greg is doing fine at his new position at Vocelli’s. He no longer delivers pizzas, but he puts the sauce, cheese, and toppings on the pizzas. Greg has earned Employee of the Month two months in a row and he also is now able to take the pizzas out of the oven and drop them into the boxes. Greg has is now reaping the awards and the company as well. What about the Schubb family?

“They plan on honoring my brother Mark at halftime for the Cincinnati game. Mark was heavily recruited by Pitt until his injury during a Foghat concert. They also gave us a Pitt Band CD if we decide to drive up and free pierogies!” exclaims Steven.

As for Greg, could this lead to him returning to the football field?

“I may be done with football. I’m making some big plays here and I’m going to work my way to Employee of the Year and maybe management.” Greg says.

From his days on the football to tragedy, Greg is now rising again. Maybe not on the football field, but he’s rising higher than the dough in the ovens. We all hope the dough Greg makes means much more than if he was a pro.
